It all depend on the dark whereby u keep the enemy, for instance when you keep you enemy in the dark of unforgiveness u invariably keeping yourself in darkness, unforgiveness takes away your peace and without peace there can not be progress that is why the bible admonishes us to forgive so that our father also we forgive us. the place i am talking from is in the place of our character and attitude
Every unGodly and unhealthy attitude and Character that you refuse to expose or bring to the light is an enemy and it has the tendency to keep you in darkness, that means in that dark you may not like it but you see yourself engaging in it and afterwards you start regreting your actions, because from the beginning it was not so but because you abhor it, it began to grow and anything that grows in the wrong direction will definitely lead to the wrong part. that is why anything you keep in the dark will always keep you in darkness until you expose it, you are not free from it.
